The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control), form a Personal Area Network (PAN), extend to cover a small geographical area (a home, office or a group of building to form the Local Area Network), span cities (ranging from several blocks of buildings to entire cities) to form a Metropolitan Area Network, or cover a broad area (i.e., any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries) to form a Wide Area Network.
